Wineries and Vineyards
Wine grape growing and winemaking in Humboldt County began in earnest in the 1980s. Humboldt County produces grapes – many of them organic – in the diverse micro-climates found in the various regions of the county. The South and East areas of the county are warmer and drier, while the North is cooler and more moist. While wineries make wine from locally grown Humboldt County grapes, some winemakers source grapes from sought after vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino counties as well as from the Sierra Foothills. These wines are also produced in Humboldt County
Today, there are over 150 acres of vineyards planted in Humboldt County, many of those smaller, family owned properties. Oftentimes you’ll find estate wines that may even be crafted on the property, but just as often you are bound to find a vineyard designation on wines from many different producers.
This all contributes to the tapestry of diversity and quality that makes our wine growing region so unique. The old adage that “the wine is made in the vineyard” holds true here, with vineyards being meticulously farmed by owners and vineyard managers and carefully assessed by a community of talented winemakers. Humboldt County is an important part of Wine Country for Northern Californians and a great discovery for any traveler.
Many of the wineries have tasting rooms in which visitors are invited to learn about the various wines and offer tours to teach guests about the winemaking process. Some wineries and vineyards are open for tours by appointment. Many of our member wineries sell wine directly to adult consumers in states which allow for wine shipments.
